Leave Disney And PETA Out Of It
Posted by: jn at 1:54PM MT on April 1, 2009
On more than one occasion, I've observed a common misconception from posters on the Billings Gazette relating to animals in some of the articles. There are several examples of this, and recently the articles on the proposed horse slaughter plant and the cancellation of the Elephant Parade come to mind. I've observed that whenever an opposing opinion is voiced, it's common for a certain few to attack, accusing them of posting with emotion rather than with intellect. This really irks me, for several reasons.
To the attackers, I ask you this: who gave you authority to attack an opposing opinion just because the voice carries emotion? What does Disney or PETA have to do with a poster's voice and reason? For what purpose do you feel the need to automatically label someone a tree-hugging-environmentalist or a radical activist, where's your evidence? Are you so insecure in your own views, you must attack someone else? And why in the hell can't you actually read what was written instead of putting words into others' mouths? I don't think having grown up watching Disney cartoons and movies influenced me to develop my passion (or compassion) for animals. I was born with an inherent appreciation for those society likes to call the "lesser" species. As a matter of fact, I'd like to slap along side the head the idiot who decided that for me and for the species. I'm not talking about God either, for as a child, the bible scared the living daylights out of me and I couldn't imagine an omnipotent and loving God caring so little about the animals who served His people, who in turn, sacrificed them in the name of God. So the irony and hypocrisy elude me. I also don't need the likes of PETA to tell me how to think. I don't abhor the founding ideas of the organization, but I do abhor the current state of indifference and propaganda they create. If you want to be a vegetarian and not eat meat, that's fine with me, I'm not going to stand in your way. If you want to argue medical advancement vs lab animals, there's an opportunity for healthy debate, but I'm not going there. I just don't appreciate the assumed association by proxy that attackers love to falsely accuse you of. I think in some cases, it is much more difficult to write or speak with emotion rather than mechanically. It takes courage to draw up emotions (like anger, or conversely, the act of empathy) from the very depths of your soul and find a way to express them without fear of being chastised and ridiculed. I believe those who posted comments from the heart on those issues are more than likely, decent and caring individuals who would probably give you the shirt off their backs if you asked. They deserve the same consideration and respect as the attackers feel they deserve. By the way, I loved Disney as a child, and as an adult I don't mind one bit watching a Disney movie. I think Walt was a genius who was a kid at heart and whoever could have guessed his work and legacy would provide so much joy into children's hearts and lives with his uncanny imagination and his vision?

It is not unheard of for dogs' tongues to get stuck in a hole of a toy and require extensive veterinary care and/or surgery. Sometimes the outcome results in removal of a large part of the tongue, making eating, swallowing, drinking and other normal activities difficult. Please always supervise your dog during playtime sessions with toys of this type!
