The Cat-Safe Garden: Catnip Heaven!
Posted by: jn on July 29, 2009 at 6:48PM MT
Cats are less likely to bother your plants and flowers if you have catnip in your garden.  Spaced strategically throughout your garden will allow the neighborhood cats and stray cats to choose areas away from your plants in which to play, rest, seek shade and nibble on their favorite herb (the only herb truly safe for them).

In my garden, catnip is in planters on the deck, a larger planter at a far end of the garden and a catnip patch containing several plants on the other end of the garden.  The catnip patch gets partial to full sun, but gets enough shade at different times of the day to allow the cats to rest and nap under a shade tree.

My neighbor cats and stray cats with their catnip:

As you can see, they're happy.  When they're happy, I'm happy :)

One of my neighbors gave me fresh catnip out of her garden last year for my indoor cats. They loved it! These are beautiful photos. Thank you for all the hard work you put into the articles and photos you posted!

Thank you, Smile, I have tons of pictures, but to post even a few of my favorites would end up in multiple posts and I'd be here all day. Hopefully you can get an idea of how easy it really is to accommodate the cats.

Fresh-grown catnip is the best, every time the cats bite at or rub on the leaves and flower buds, it releases the plant's oils, so much better than dried stuff you get at the store (although I still do get an occasional Cosmic Catnip container for my cats).

JN - I'm wondering if one of your stray cats might be one of my cats who has been missing since the beginning of July 2009. Would it be possible for me to email you a picture of my missing cat? If so, where should I send it?

CatLady - I believe you can email jn directly by clicking on her name or photo and sending it to her through the email link on her page. She and I have talked that way and she is great about answering.

CatLady, my email is smythejn@yahoo.com

Many of the cat photos in the three articles are neighbor cats, but a few of them I don't know if have owners, the long haired calico girl for example, has so far been here only 3 times.
