Hey Rocky, want to go halfsies on the Pontiac Silverdome?

The Pontiac Silverdome, home of the Detroit Lions when they were a halfway decent team and host to SuperBowl XVI, recently sold for not much more than our two mortgages combined. Constructed in 1975 for $55 million, it recently sold for $583,000 to a Canadian real estate firm.

The price is indicative of the collapse of the real estate market and depression-like conditions in the Detroit Metro area.

The Silverdome will be used for Major League Soccer games, auctions, and tractor pulls, which is what the Metrodome in Minneapolis has to look forward to if and when the Vikings get their new stadium built.

Hennepin County should sell the dome to the Vikings. The new stadium should just take the footprint in Minneapolis, not a new one in Eden Prairie. The Viks play in UM's new stadium in Dinkytown until construction is complete. Why does the county need a 64,111 capacity stadium?

The worst re-use of an old sports arena: When the Montreal Canadiens left the Montreal Forum (along with Maple Leaf Gardens, the two most famous barns in hockey history), the building was remade into a multiplex cinema. Sorta like Carmike taking over the Arena Formerly Known As METRA.

The idea of the Vikes building a new stadium at the site of the old one is a good one. Because of that, it will never happen, this being the NFL we're talking about. (The best old/new site would be in Bloomington -- but I doubt they'll tear down the Mall of America anytime soon, even if Bud Grant is still alive.)
