Evil People
Posted by: rainbowed on July 20, 2009 at 3:00PM MT
I wonder how we identify truely evil people. Are they the ones who fly planes into buildings because of the religious folks they buy from? Or are they the ones who go into another country and kill their leader and others because of the religious folks they buy from? Should we kill people to show them that killing people is wrong? Are there really people who are totally evil? Is there a scientific explanation for behavior like Hitlers? Is there some way to "cure" it?

Reading your post made me think of Jeffrey Dahmer. Or Ted Bundy. These were people whose soul/brain/ethics/whatever was clearly messed up. What does it mean for an entire society to go psycho, as in the case of Nazi Germany? It seems that the tendency to be a mass-murderer or seriously morally-challenged entity is an aberrant behavior that is presently being manifested in Islamic terrorism. But it is, of course, not exclusive to Islam. Ask me, I say the whole world is broke.

Some days I feel that way. About the time I give up it seems I witness some act of kindness, or some words that turn someone else from what appears to be a hateful evil being into a kind caring person. I look at what we have learned about the universe in the last few hundred years, especially the last hundred, and can't help but feel hopeful that we will be able to learn much more about the human mind. This is one area where I feel really blessed to be gay. I know there is scientific fact behind that reality, and it will be proven some day. Unfortunately right now, I think our understanding of the human mind and behavior are at the level of the biblical writers in their understanding of the universe. Being the eternal optimist I usually am, I'm betting it will not take us 2000 years to figure out the human mind thanks to technology.
